Alkaline phosphatase

An enzyme found in the bile ducts and in bone, and reported as the two added together.

It is the routine test that flags a blocked or irritated bile duct, and separately it moves with bone turnover.

A raised value is meaningless until you know which source it came from -- GGT is what answers that, since GGT rises with the liver and not with bone. It is normally high in adolescence and in pregnancy, and rises while a fracture heals.

Worth discussing a persistent rise, and worth asking which source it came from.
