A count of the atherogenic particles in your blood, since every LDL, VLDL and Lp(a) particle carries exactly one apolipoprotein B.
Two people with the same LDL cholesterol can carry very different numbers of particles, and the particle count tracks risk better than the cholesterol they carry.
Where it disagrees with LDL, it is usually the more informative of the two -- particularly when triglycerides are high and the calculated LDL is unreliable. Unlike LDL it barely moves with fasting.
Worth discussing when it reads high despite an LDL that looks acceptable.
