Fibrinogen
The protein that clotting turns into the mesh of a clot.
Unit mg/dLTypical adult range 180–350 mg/dL
What it is
The protein that clotting turns into the mesh of a clot.
Why it matters
It is both a clotting factor and an acute-phase protein, so it rises with inflammation as readily as CRP does and falls when the liver is struggling.
Reading the number
Because it rises with any inflammation, a value at the top of the range says more about how well you were that week than about clotting. It is also what drives the sedimentation rate.
What moves it
recent infection or injuryinflammationpregnancysmokingliver function
When to raise it
Worth discussing a low value, which matters more than a high one.
