Unit ng/mLTypical adult range 0.28–1.22 ng/mL
What it is
The hormone released after ovulation that prepares and maintains the lining of the womb.
Why it matters
A raised value in the second half of the cycle is the standard confirmation that ovulation happened.
Reading the number
Timing is everything: it is drawn about a week before the next period is due, and the same value means opposite things on different cycle days. In men and after menopause it stays low and carries little information.
