Why it matters

It is the test that identifies Graves disease as the cause of an overactive thyroid, which the other antibodies cannot do.

Reading the number

Unlike the other two thyroid antibodies this one is worth tracking: the level falls as the disease settles and helps judge when treatment can stop. It is also the antibody that matters in pregnancy, because it crosses the placenta.
