Why it matters
Above a certain concentration it crystallises in joints, which is gout; it also tracks with metabolic and kidney problems.
Reading the number
The threshold that matters is the one where it comes out of solution, not the lab range, and it is well below the printed upper limit for some people. It falls during an acute gout attack, so a normal value then proves nothing.
