Urine urobilinogen

A breakdown product of bilirubin that gut bacteria make, a small amount of which is reabsorbed and passed in urine.

Small amounts are normal and expected; its value is in the pattern it forms with bilirubin when jaundice is being worked up.

Absent is as informative as raised -- none at all suggests bile is not reaching the gut. The strip is unreliable on a sample that has stood or been exposed to light, and antibiotics lower it by suppressing the gut bacteria that make it.

Worth reading with the bilirubin results rather than on its own.
