Why it matters
It is an acute-phase band, so it rises within a day or two of inflammation starting anywhere.
Reading the number
A raised band on its own usually just means you were inflamed that week. A persistently low one is the finding worth noticing, because it can point to inherited alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
