Alpha-2 globulins

The second electrophoresis band, carrying haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin and alpha-2 macroglobulin.

Unit g/dLTypical adult range 0.45–0.97 g/dL

The second electrophoresis band, carrying haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin and alpha-2 macroglobulin.

It rises strongly with inflammation and drops when red cells are being broken down, because haptoglobin is consumed mopping up the released hemoglobin.

A high band tracks inflammation; a low one is more interesting, and usually means haemolysis. It also rises markedly when the kidneys are losing protein.

Worth discussing a low band together with hemoglobin.
