Metabolism
Homocysteine
An amino acid your body clears using vitamins B12, B6 and folate.
Unit µmol/LTypical adult range 3.7–13.9 µmol/L
What it is
An amino acid your body clears using vitamins B12, B6 and folate.
Why it matters
It rises when any of those three run short, which makes it a functional check on B-vitamin status rather than just a level in the blood.
Reading the number
It is also raised by kidney disease and by simply getting older, so a high value is not automatically a vitamin problem. The sample must be separated quickly or the result reads falsely high.

When to raise it
Worth discussing a raised value alongside B12 and folate.
