Interleukin-6
The signalling molecule that tells the liver to start making CRP.
Unit pg/mLTypical adult range < 5.9 pg/mL
What it is
The signalling molecule that tells the liver to start making CRP.
Why it matters
It is the most direct link between an inflammatory trigger and the CRP value further down the panel.
Reading the number
It rises and falls hours before CRP does, and it is high for a day or so after hard exercise. Like TNF-alpha it is short-lived and assay-dependent, so compare only values from the same laboratory.

When to raise it
Worth reading with CRP rather than on its own.
