Why it matters

When SHBG is unusually high or low the total is misleading, and this is the number that is not.

Reading the number

Most laboratories calculate rather than measure it, from total testosterone, SHBG and albumin -- so it inherits the error of all three, and a calculated value from one lab does not compare with a measured one from another. It carries the same morning timing rule as the total.
