It answers a different question from ordinary vitamin D: not how much you have stored, but how hard your body is working to activate it.
This is not the test for vitamin D deficiency -- the stored 25-OH form is. Counter-intuitively, this value is often normal or high when stores are low, because PTH is pushing activation. Its half-life is hours, so it is a snapshot.
