The hormone your parathyroid glands release when blood calcium falls. It pulls calcium out of bone and activates vitamin D.

Why it matters

It is the control system behind calcium, so a calcium result is only half a finding until you know what PTH was doing at the same time.

Reading the number

It only means anything read against calcium from the same draw: high PTH with low calcium is the body correctly compensating, usually for low vitamin D, while high PTH with high calcium is a different finding entirely. It varies through the day and is higher in winter.
