Deficiency is common enough to matter, and it shows up as slow healing, frequent infections and hair loss before anything else.
Less than one percent of body zinc is in the blood, and the level falls with any inflammation and after a meal, so a low value during an illness proves little. Fasted morning samples are the ones that compare. Zinc and copper compete, so supplementing one lowers the other.
Worth discussing a low fasted value alongside slow healing or hair loss.
